Online learning

Lexilogy is a cost effective, powerful online learning resource to help reluctant and struggling readers to improve their reading and spelling skills.

Lexilogy is also a highly successful resource for helping students with English as a second language.

Meaning of Lexílogy: lexis = word en logia = study of. So Lexilogy means 'the study of words'.

Based on many years of academic and user research, Lexilogy provides an easy to use, step-by-step approach to help children and adults master foundational reading and spelling skills.

At school and at home

Lexilogy is an easy to understand and convenient to use online intervention program that can be used at regular intervals, in school or at home.

Lexilogy invites students and adults to autonomously follow the step-by-step processes to rapidly improve their spelling and reading skills.

For busy teachers, finding the time to give struggling readers and spellers the attention they need, is always hard.

For parents, understanding the right way to support their children is also a challenge.

For specialists

Lexilogy can also be used by specialists as an intervention program within their own institute or practice.

Results

Research carried out at the University of York and the University of Amsterdam shows Lexilogy’s substantial positive effects on both reading and spelling skills for both native speakers and second language learners by addressing morphological knowledge!

See latest publication in ‘European Journal of Special Needs Education’:

'Improvements in reading and spelling skills after a phonological and morphological knowledge intervention in Greek children with spelling difficulties: a pilot study'

Students show an average of 33 percent of improvement in reading and spelling skills.

How it works

Reading and spelling skills are based on our ability to distinguish and apply sounds (phonemes) and corresponding symbols (graphemes). This ability is called 'phonological awareness' and forms the first step when learning to read and write.

The next step is to understand complex word structures, known as 'morphological awareness'. This is required for developing advanced reading and writing skills. It is an essential step, enabling us to automatically recognise morphemes (the smallest unit in a word that still has meaning) and combine them into complex words.

Lexilogy develops phonological and morphological awareness in readers and spellers

Many children and adults find reading and spelling a challenge. Whether they suffer from dyslexia, or English is their second language, Lexilogy offers an easy, cost effective intervention scheme.

Lexilogy ensures users acquire phonological and morphological awareness through an interactive 'game'. Step-by-step, users learn how to merge sounds into syllables, and morphemes into complex word structures, until comprehensive reading and spelling skills are conquered.

Lexilogy is the result of decades of academic research into the decision-making processes involved in reading and spelling and the difficulties experienced by students and adults with dyslexia, reading and spelling difficulties or English as a second language. It is a 'tool', with a clear beginning, middle and end; three stages forming a comprehensive system.

The team

Lexilogy was developed by Hester Hoette. Born in the Netherlands, Hester studied developmental psychology at the University of Amsterdam specialising among others in cognitive meta-linguistic processes relating to reading and spelling, and learning difficulties. Her final thesis at the university discussed learning difficulties with a focus on dyslexia.

In 1995 Hester moved to Greece where, in 1998, she established a learning centre specialising in reading and spelling difficulties. She also conducted psycho-linguistic research focusing on cognitive meta-linguistic processes involved in learning to read, write and spell.

Hester has 20 years of experience in psycho-linguistic research and treating reading and spelling difficulties

This inspired and enabled her to develop Lexilogy; a unique, easy to use and very effective method for treating reading and spelling difficulties.

Hester’s commitment to making her successful method accessible and affordable for a large audience led to the establishment of the online platform lexilogy.com.

Joes Koppers (interaction designer) visualised and subsequently realised all the ideas in a web application, full of magic, playful interface-interactions and accessible to everyone online.

Emma Hoette (dancer and visual artist) and Isabel Kyriazi (actress) vocalised Lexilogy's colourful spoken instructions and words that accompany every lesson and stimulate the learning process.
